Start with the Battery

Generally speaking, your golf cart’s battery can be the source of many issues. If you notice your vehicle isn’t performing like it used to, this is the place you’ll want to start your troubleshooting process. Use a hydrometer to diagnose issues about battery performance.

A hydrometer is a device to measure the specific gravity of your battery’s electrolytes—a lower reading indicates a lower battery charge. Use this tool to get an idea of whether or not you should consider replacing your battery. However, before you change out your battery, make sure your golf cart’s reduced performance isn’t due to a loose connection. In case it is, all you’ll need to do is tighten it to get your vehicle back to normal.

Check the Motor

Next, examine the electric motor on your vehicle. As you may know, the engine on your E-Z-GO golf cart is in a panel toward the back of your machine. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that secure the panel door.

Once you can access the motor, reset it using the red button. It works like a circuit breaker, and you can find it in the same area where the wires enter the motor unit. In most cases, this should get your cart working.

Inspect the Speed Controller

Finally, you’ll want to check your golf cart’s speed controller, especially if your vehicle isn’t driving at a consistent speed when accelerating or it is jerking unusually. Typically, E-Z-GO golf carts have two different speed controllers—the Drive Control System and the Precision Drive System, found on newer models.

To troubleshoot this part, you'll want to keep your maintenance switch on “tow maintenance” mode and remove the black negative cable from your battery. Lift the cover to your speed controller and reconnect the cable to your battery. Make sure each wire running through the system is connected and attached as required. While you are at it, check each wire for rust, corrosion, or frayed ends and measure your battery’s voltage. You’ll want to press your accelerator to see that the reading changes from zero to the battery’s full voltage. If there is no voltage reading, it might mean that your speed controller isn’t working. Connect with a trained mechanic to get it replaced.
